Things As They Are is an album of mostly original material with words and music by Kate, featuring the upbeat anthem Chime, as well as a powerful setting to music of WB Yeats’s poem The Falling Of The Leaves and a poignant bass and vocal arrangement of Janis Ian’s Stars.

With two other album releases on the acclaimed jazz label "Black Box Records", this is Kate's first original album. Kate moved to Canada in 2003 after the final sell-out performance of her tribute to Peggy Lee at the Festival Hall and was inspired to start writing what she now thinks of as her debut album.

She returned to the UK and went into the studio with her band Malcolm Edmonstone (piano), Jonty Fisher (bass) and Ben Reynolds (drums) and the fantastic Nigel Price guesting on guitar.

"The songs are performed with a shimmering vocal versatility... she has the musical talent and jewel-eyed confidence needed to guarantee an audience a good time." The Evening Standard

"Dimbleby is clearly a talent to watch, blessed not only with a great voice but a real gift as a songwriter in her own right." The Sunday Telegraph

"It was said about Fred and Ginger, 'She gave him sex and he gave her class.' Well, Kate Dimbleby has both already and it is a killer combination." The Scotsman

lyrics

Sometimes I’m so excited I don’t know what to do
It’s like my heart has taken over and my body’s ringing true
MY eyes glint with EXPECTATION
And my insides thrill with giggles with giggles
A rushing sensation that in minutes turns to
drivel

oh what I might be if I try not to notice
and what I might see if I try to stay focused
but why do my thoughts crowd around me like JOKERS?

I can’t give in
But I can’t give up
There’s so much fear to fill me up
like liquid stone I’m grey most of the time
But for a moment some days
everything around me starts to
CHIME

I was only just eighteen when I met a dead man walking
He summed me up in sentences I couldn’t stop him talking
About the glories he’d achieved
And what he could DO with me, this empty
metaphor of nothing that he strapped across his knee

what I might be if I try not to notice
and what I might see if I try to stay focused
but why do my thoughts crowd around me like jokers?

I can’t give in
But I can’t give up
There’s so much fear to fill me up like liquid stone
I’m grey most of the time
But for a moment some days
everything around me starts to
CHIME
